Tips on Staying Safe During Halloween

By: the Dakota Children’s Advocacy Center

Halloween is an exciting time for children, filled with costumes, candy, and fun. However, it’s important for parents and kids to remember safety while trick-or-treating. By following a few simple precautions, families can ensure a safe and enjoyable night.

  1. Trick-or-treating in your neighborhood can be fun, but for a safer option, consider attending a Halloween event put on by your school, faith institution, or local community groups.
  2. If older children are trick-or-treating alone, plan a safe route and means of communication.
  3. Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers, especially if costumes are dark colors.
  4. Watch out for cars that are turning or backing up, and teach kids to always use crosswalks.
  5. Visit well-lit homes and ensure you can always see your child when they approach a front door.
  6. If possible, use face paint instead of masks on children so it’s easier for them to see.
  7. Check all treats collected for tampered wrapping. As a parent, sampling the candy is always encouraged.
  8. Ensure kids are never in an isolated, one-on-one situation with other adults or youth.

As your little ghosts and goblins hit the streets for a spooktacular night, remember that the best way to keep the scares at bay is with safety in mind. Happy haunting, and may your night be more of a treat than a trick!
