4 Steps to Prevent Abuse During Holiday Get-Togethers
December 2nd, 2024Tips to Reduce the Risk of Abuse During the Holidays
By: the Dakota Children’s Advocacy Center
Between back-to-school activities and the holidays, caregivers may feel extra stressed trying to get everything done while ensuring their children’s safety. It’s important for caregivers to seek help when needed, such as asking others to watch their children. Ideally, caregivers should prescreen childcare providers/babysitters, check references, and meet with candidates in advance. However, if you’re in a pinch and need to hire a babysitter you don’t know well, here are some suggestions to help keep your children safe.
- Prevent One-on-One Interactions—To reduce the need for assistance, have your children bathed and in pajamas before leaving. Set rules like keeping doors open and restricting access to certain areas, like bedrooms or basements.
- Keep Situations Interruptible – Let your sitter know that you or a trusted person may stop by. If you’re unavailable, arrange for a friend or neighbor to check in.
- Set Expectations – Discuss rules beforehand, such as no guests, photos, or social media. Inform them that you talk to your children about body safety and will ask about their time together, which can deter inappropriate behavior.
- Talk with Children – Have a conversation with your children about body safety and boundaries that you have set. If you haven’t already, set a code word that they can use if they feel unsafe. Make sure you check in with your kids after you return home.
These are good suggestions for anyone who watches your children, including family members and close friends.
