When school lets out for the summer, many parents find themselves searching for reliable caregiver support. Camps, babysitters, and daycare options can provide great experiences—but safety should always come first. By understanding risks, asking questions, and taking intentional steps, you can help prevent abuse and neglect.
Here are a few key safety tips to consider when arranging child care this summer:
- Screen all potential caregivers. Run a background check when possible and ask for references, and make sure to follow up. A responsible caregiver will expect this.
- Set the expectation for drop-ins. Let child care providers know that you may stop by unannounced, and then be sure to follow through occasionally.
- Share your family’s safety rules. This includes boundaries around touch, personal care, and discipline. Make sure caregivers understand your expectations—and take time to regularly discuss these rules with your child, too.
- Be cautious of over-eagerness. If someone is unusually enthusiastic about babysitting, trust your instincts and take a closer look. Grooming behaviors can sometimes be disguised as generosity.
- Observe your child’s behavior. Pay attention before, during, and after time spent with a caregiver. Notice any changes in mood, behavior, or routines. Behavior often signals when something’s wrong.
- Remember that abuse isn’t limited to adults. Older youth and teens can also be perpetrators of abuse.
As always, trust your gut, stay involved, and talk openly with your child. Your presence and advocacy are some of the most powerful protective factors they have. To learn more, visit the Top Tips for Hiring Care Givers on the Darkness to Light website.
