For most people, April brings thoughts of spring showers, warmer temperatures, and the promise of summer. At the Dakota Children’s Advocacy Center, April means Child Abuse Prevention Month. Whether it’s through our monthly newsletter, social media, or our annual Family Make and Take Day, we spend the month sharing prevention tips, educating our communities, and helping adults recognize the signs that a child may need support.
In North Dakota, thousands of reports of child abuse and neglect are made each year—and more than 95% of abusers are known to the child and their family. In 2025, the DCAC heard more than 340 children share their experiences with trauma and abuse. These numbers are difficult to hear, but they underscore why this work is so important. Our team provided more than 18,000 services, helping children and families begin their journey toward hope and healing.
Prevention starts with awareness, but it grows through action. By learning the signs, having open conversations with children, and creating safe, supportive environments, each of us plays a role in protecting kids. This April, we invite you to stand with us—because when a community comes together, hope happens here.
